Hansen’s Tree Service has been named a 2008 “Hero of the Planet” by the St. Louis Business Journal. Hansen’s has locations in St. Louis, O’Fallon, and Branson, Missouri, and was a finalist in the Sustainable Operations category.
Hansen’s received the honor this week because of the company’s dedication to keeping green waste out of land fills, implementing environmentally friendly practices at its facilities, and pursuing innovative ways to recycle materials. According to the article by Rick Desloge in the October 24-30 issue of the St. Louis Business Journal:
“Hansen’s has produced about 35,000 tons of mulch this year, and with the fall leaf and tree cleanup season, the total could be more than 50,000 tons, said Jeff Hansen, president and owner who founded the company in 1988 … Hansen’s Tree Service started recycling its green waste in 2001. This year the total has grown to some 150,000 cubic yards of wood waste, leaves and grass that’s converted into mulch and compost…
Keeping wood and other green waste out of landfills is what Hansen had in mind when he started working with communities to take over that part of their trash collection. Hansen’s Tree Service now handles green recycling programs for five communities in the western part of the metro area – O’Fallon, Lake St. Louis, Wentzville, Wright City and Warrenton – and Branson in southwest Missouri.”
